Credits - Sylvia Lewis

Sylvia Lewis, former administrator in the Pender County Schools, North Carolina, has been in the field of education for over 35 years and has had a wealth of experience in both general education and gifted education. She has served as a classroom teacher, resource teacher for gifted education and language arts, curriculum specialist for grades K-12, middle school consultant for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), and as State Consultant for Gifted Education for the state of North Carolina.

At NCDPI, Lewis led the development of a curriculum framework for gifted learners, based on North Carolina's Standard Course of Study. She also was responsible for the development of several other publications during her tenure with the Department of Public Instruction. She has had numerous speaking engagements and conducted staff development for teachers and administrators on local and national levels.

In addition to her experiences in North Carolina, she has served the field of education in California, Hawaii, Rhode Island, and Virginia.

Among her many achievements are the 1994 Lifetime Achievement Award from the North Carolina Association for the Gifted and Talented, selection to represent North Carolina at Stanford University for the Accelerated Schools Project, the 1984 Outstanding Teacher of the Year in Gifted Education for Region II of North Carolina, recognition by the University of California at Berkeley as an Outstanding Teacher Trainer, recipient of the Mark Roberts Honor Grant from Onslow-Lejeune Reading Association, and the 1983 North Carolina Writing Project Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Lewis holds a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and has five certifications for Licensure from the Department of Public Instruction, North Carolina.
